Located 40 minutes from Christchurch International Airport, Canterbury Gliding Club is based in the foothills of the Southern Alps, in a perfect location for soaring!
Soar above local mountains, rivers and lakes as your experienced instructor takes you on this trial instructional flight. Take control and have a go at gliding by yourself, with the instructor there to encourage you! This experience includes a full briefing about the glider, its controls and basic instruments before climbing on board and aero-towing to the local mountains. Learn how to search for lift to stay airborne and enjoy fantastic sights of the Southern Alps and Canterbury foothills with your seat up font with an uninterrupted view.
There may be on opportunity to extend the flight, depending on conditions, just talk to your instructor. It will be a truly unforgettable experience and our aim is to spark your interest in this amazing sport. We have a great club and some very experienced pilots, several of whom hold current world and New Zealand records. You may have heard of Richie McCaw or seen the fabulous New Zealand movie Chasing Great with the stunning gliding clips and a bit of rugby in it also? Well Richie is a member of our club. We can’t promise he will be out there when you are, but you never know!

Great experience
My husband LOVED his trial glider flight! The instructor was knowledgeable and passionate about gliding. He talked Mel through everything, let him fly the glider for most of the trip and then brought the glider down beautifully. Thank you!!

GLIDING ON
Well worth the money and my Flight Instructor Jenny was absolutely fantastic. I was fortunate enough to go up in a brand new glider. It had all the latest gadgets. I even took the Control Stick and flew the Glider with Jenny relaying precise instructions and guiding me through. It was definitely one of life's highlights, that's for sure. The flight is 45mins and we soared to nearly 5900 feet at one point. So INCREDIBLE. My husband is going up next Saturday.

The flight of a life time. Bucket list check off.
From the moment I arrived the club members made me, and my wife feel very welcome and special guests. I was included in the prep of the glider for the flight and was informed that the glider we were going to use was a high spec aerobatic machine. The cockpit was fully explained to me and the sophisticated control panel was described in detail. Having had some flying experience I was able to understand what was being said. Towed into the sky to approx 1500 meters the tow plane was released, and the sensation of free flight was beautiful. John the pilot explained to me what was happening as we circled the hills looking for lift. For a short while I was given control of the glider doing simple bands and turns. Slowly we made our way back to the airfield and after a 40-minute flight a smooth if slightly bumpy landing was achieved. The views and the memories from this flight will stay with me always. I would like to thank the team at Canterbury Glider Club for their professionalism and friendliness for a wonderful experience. Digby Joplin
